Because Gamzee and Equius were matesprits when they were younger, that is why he keeps E%ecutor Steeleye around. He would have probably killed him sweeps ago if not for the secret emotional bonding he has for him.
He spends every day trying to make Steeleye feel as worthless as possible to get over past feelings. He terminated all of his relationships when he snapped, but he secretly keeps them with him at all times.
